When mainstream media breaks a story like this and it's everywhere, this is the perfect opportunity to discuss Christian principles with our kids. Show them what evil in our world looks like. Show them what potentially happens when a relationship is built on a foundation other than Christ.
Here are some take-a-ways from the Rice story that we discussed as a family after watching the video clip.
1. Rices' fiancé married Rice after this occurred. I want my daughters to be aware of the fact that violence against them is NEVER ok. EVER. I want the Prince Charming in my daughter's life to know my daughter's worth. Our daughters are so valuable that they are not to be treated in a disposable manner. Teach her to know her own value.
2. The truth came out. Sometimes, we think we've gotten away with our wrong only to have light shed on it in the end. That's what happened to Rice. The story first broke in the spring and wound up in a two game suspension of Rice. It wasn't until the video tape became public knowledge did he lose his job with the Ravens.
3. The coverup vs. the fight for truth: This story has been known by the NFL for some time. In essence, people were scrambling to cover the story up so that no one had to be held truly accountable. Parents, no one will fight for your daughter more than you will. As Christians, we are called to live in a world and yet to be unlike it. Fight for your daughter to be different. It's worth the fight.
Parents, talk to your daughters about what they should do in a situation such as this. Teach her to spot a fraud long before his actions are less than honorable. Teach her at a young age to be able to know what a godly man/boy looks like, even at a young age.
