In his normal witty style, Kevin Leman knocks it out of the park with this one.
This book is a must read for any dad with daughters. It is filled with practical, hands-on things that will enhance any dad's parenting skills. It's an older book (2000) but so very practical and is definitely a practical, hands-on piece for dads
Dr. Leman begins the book by explaining why a dad is needed in the life of a
daughter. In our society today we see so many homes where dad is not physically
present. If he is, many times he's emotionally disengaged. Dr. Leman says every
daughter has a father hunger and will search their entire lives to have this filled. If dad is present and intentionally pours into this void, daughter will have her needs met. In my own ministry, I've seen this time and time again and believe it to be true.
DADD, Dad Attention Deficit Disorder is Dr. Leman's way of explaining the emotional disconnect that often occurs between dads and daughters. "To your little girl, the world is a wilderness. She feels lost, and she's waiting for you to show up and get her through it. But here's the catch: Dads must learn to guide their daughters out of this wilderness rather than carry them through it." (p. 50) This "theory" explains why so many women marry the sort of husbands they do. If dad wants the cycle of dysfunction to stop, it must begin with him.
A dad will teach his daughter so many things about the life that is ahead. He will teach her to trust or always wonder. He will instill values within her that will change the life she leads. He will instill confidence within her that will dictate many of the decisions she will make. He will allow her to fail while still at home so that he can help to guide her through it without rescuing her. He will pursue her so that she knows what it means to be loved and valued.
Dads will shape a daughter's view of God. Dr. Leman shows dads how to approach the task of father and showing daughters what it's like to be in a relationship with the Heavenly Father. A daughter's view of her earthly father directly influences her view of her Heavenly Father.
To any dad who dreads the long aisle on the wedding day, this book is a must read. A book that will challenge you to intentionally parent your daughters. This book will teach you to be the dad your daughter needs and the dad God is calling you to be.
