Accidental Family Ministry

This past summer as we were meeting and loading up for our kids camp, we had an unexpected bit of family ministry take place. As parents were dropping kids off and were signing our behavior policy and pick up notification, we had the opportunity to engage parents that turned out to be something we will now do on a regular basis.
A ton of our kids are from the community surrounding our church. Most days we never hear from parents, let alone see and become involved in conversation.

We've recently instituted another change as a result of this experience. In order to encourage even more relaxed conversation between small group leaders and parents, we've changed the way we dismiss kids from their small groups on Wednesday evenings. Parents are now asked to present their check out tag to the attendant then proceed to their child's small group area to pick up their child from the small group leader.
These may not seem like huge changes but we are making ministry to parents a priority. In order for this to really happen, we've got to earn their trust. Trust happens after time and when you're in relationship.

I'm a children's pastor who is doing what I know I was designed to do. I love to encourage others who are in ministry.  The things you'll read on here are the things I'd share with you over a cup of coffee as we swap ideas and share the victories and frustrations of ministry.

I am the Children's Pastor at the Anderson First Church of the Nazarene. The views and opinions expressed here are my own and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of Anderson First Church.
